Decontamination often entails two major concerns: wet conditions and high levels of hazardous substances.

Personal protective equipment used here must stand up to all prevailing conditions for extended periods.

Inside the decontamination station (such as a rapid deployment portable decon tent), work is often strenuous and intensive. The workload is high, and the respiratory protection must not only provide protection from airborne hazards, but also supply enough air to the wearer to perform hard work.

The SE-shield system is built for this sort of work. The system is an integrated combination of pressurised protective suits and positive-pressure respirators. Both the suits and respirators have been tested against a wide variety of chemicals and warfare agents, such as:

  • Sarin
  • Nerve gas
  • Cyanogen
  • Phosgene
  • Radioactive dust
  • Tear gas
  • Anthrax
  • Smallpox
  • Many more

In addition, the equipment is also built to withstand rigorous decontamination after the shift. (See Decontamination of Responders)
