MEDICAL and health personnel stationed inside hospitals and care centres are working in a basically clean and safe environment most of the time. The hospital itself must be kept as free from any contaminants as possible. However, there is a possibility in some cases that bacteria and viruses may be present on a patient, for instance, and care must be taken. Where is a small risk of contaminant slipping through the net, as it were, at least a half mask filter respirator should be worn.
FORENSIC specialists often run the risk of being exposed to hazardous substances. By the nature of their job, forensic workers come into direct contact with contaminated material, such as clothing, debris, bags, body parts, people's belongings, furniture and many other objects. There may often be a need to visit the site of an incident where residue and wreckage may still carry traces of the contaminant. Even some time after an incident, pockets of contaminant may remain, releasing the contaminant when disturbed. As forensic work can involve all types of CBRN hazards, there is a need to select the appropriate level of protection on a case-by-case basis.
